How to Install a Cooling Fan in a Gateway Laptop

With increased processing power comes the need for more cooling. Newer processors are becoming more powerful and are generating more and more heat. To maintain the safety and performance of your system, you must have adequate cooling. If your laptop computer is running hotter than you would like, you may install a better CPU cooling fan to help alleviate the problem. Upgrading laptop components can be a tricky endeavor, but if you follow these instructions, you will be able to successfully add a new CPU cooling fan.

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You'll Need:

  • Screwdriver

Instructions

  1. Turn off your Gateway laptop, remove any external components and unplug it from the wall.
  2. Remove the faceplate from your laptop. It will usually be held in to place by a series of plastic hinges, so remove these with care.
  3. Remove your keyboard from your Gateway laptop. It will usually be held in place by four screws located around the corners of your laptop. Consult your laptop's instruction manual if you are having trouble locating the screws.
  4. Unscrew and remove your laptop's display unit by removing the four screws located around the base of the display. Then disconnect the video cables linking your display to your laptop base.
  5. Unfasten and remove the outer shell of your laptop by removing any screws or fasteners. You should now see the internal components of your laptop.
  6. Your cooling fan is the large fan usually found in the upper-left corner of your laptop. Unfasten it from the processor.
  7. Attach your new cooling can to your CPU by aligning the corners and fastening it. If you are having any trouble with this, consult your fan's instruction booklet for its installation procedure.
  8. Re-assemble your Gateway laptop.
